How Ravia calculates your numbers

Ravia defaults to the Pythagorean system, named for the Greek philosopher Pythagoras (born c. 570 BCE on Samos), whose school taught that number underlies the structure of reality — though the numerology system itself was assembled by later admirers of his ideas.

The letter mapping is beautifully simple. Assign A=1, B=2, C=3 … I=9, then start over: J=1, K=2 … R=9, then S=1 through Z=8.

To reduce any multi-digit number, add its digits and repeat: 48 → 4 + 8 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3. The exceptions are 11, 22, and 33 — the master numbers — which are left unreduced when they appear as a component total or a final result.

Your Life Path is derived from your full birth date. Ravia reduces the month, day, and year separately, then sums and reduces the result — preserving master numbers along the way. Here's a worked example for someone born July 20, 1993:

1. Month: July = 7. Already a single digit. → 7
2. Day: 20 → 2 + 0 = 2
3. Year: 1993 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22. That's a master number, so we pause — 22 stays as 22 for the sum (and Ravia will note that master-number flavor in your reading).
4. Sum: 7 + 2 + 22 = 31 → 3 + 1 = 4

Life Path 4 — the builder — with a 22 humming in the year component. If the final sum itself had landed on 11, 22, or 33, we'd have stopped there and called it a master Life Path.

Why reduce components separately instead of adding every digit in one long string? Because the two methods occasionally disagree on whether a master number appears, and the component method is the most widely used convention among practitioners. Ravia always shows which path the math took, so nothing is hidden in the machinery.

All three come from your full name as it appears on your birth certificate — the traditional convention, on the logic that this is your "original" name. (Married names and nicknames can be read too, as secondary layers.)

Expression (Destiny): convert every letter to its number, sum each name separately, reduce each, then sum and reduce the results — preserving master numbers. This number is read as your natural toolkit: talents, working style, what you're built to do.

Soul Urge (Heart's Desire): the same process using only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U — with Y counted as a vowel when it functions as one, as in "Lynn"). Vowels are the breath inside a name, so tradition assigns them to your inner life: what you privately want and need.

Personality: only the consonants — the structure of the name, read as the outer self: the impression you give before people know you well.

A pleasing bit of internal consistency: since every letter is either a vowel or a consonant, your Soul Urge and Personality numbers are the two halves that together produce your Expression number. Inner wants plus outer style equals what you express in the world. The math and the metaphor agree.

The Personal Year is numerology's timing tool — a nine-year repeating cycle that assigns each year a theme, from 1 (beginnings) through 9 (completion).

The formula: birth month + birth day + current calendar year, reduced. For our July 20 person in 2026:

1. Month: 7
2. Day: 20 → 2
3. Year: 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1
4. Sum: 7 + 2 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

A Personal Year 1: traditionally a year for planting, initiating, and backing yourself. Most practitioners (Ravia included) run the Personal Year from January to January, though some run it birthday to birthday — we'll tell you if the two readings differ meaningfully for your dates. Note that master numbers are conventionally reduced in Personal Year calculations (an 11 year is usually read as an intensified 2 year), and Ravia flags it when that comes up.

The Chaldean system, rooted in ancient Babylonia and brought to the modern West largely by the Irish numerologist Cheiro (1866–1936), differs from Pythagorean in three key ways: letters are valued 1 through 8 only — no letter is ever assigned a 9, which the Chaldeans held sacred and set apart; assignments are based on a letter's sound and vibration rather than its alphabetical position; and compound numbers (like 27, "the Sceptre") carry meanings of their own rather than being mere waypoints to a single digit.

We default to Pythagorean for practical, honest reasons. Its mapping is fully transparent and reproducible — anyone with the A=1 table can verify every step of their reading by hand, which fits Ravia's show-the-math ethos. It's also the dominant convention in modern Western numerology, meaning your results here will match what you'd calculate from most books and can be compared across our guides consistently. Chaldean sound-based assignments involve judgment calls (especially for non-English names) that make "check my work" harder.

That said, Chaldean isn't wrong — it's a different lens with a longer pedigree, and Ravia is happy to run your numbers through both systems and discuss where they diverge. Divergence, frankly, is where the most interesting conversations happen.

No — and we'd rather tell you that plainly than hedge. Numerology is a reflective tradition: a symbolic system humans have used for millennia to think about themselves, catalogued across cultures in sources like Britannica's history of number symbolism. There is no scientific evidence that the digits of your birth date or the letters of your name determine your personality or your future. When researchers have tested number-based folklore directly — as a BMJ study famously did with the "27 Club" myth — the mystique tends not to survive contact with the data.

So why practice it at all? For the same reason people keep journals, read poetry, or draw tarot cards: structured reflection works, whatever the structure. A Life Path reading hands you a set of archetypes and asks: does this pattern show up in your life? Where? What do you want to do about it? Those are excellent questions regardless of who's asking.

How to use numerology well, in three rules: take what resonates and leave the rest without guilt; treat readings as prompts, never as predictions or permission slips; and never let a number overrule your own judgment about a real decision, a real person, or your health.
